 “This workshop meets APT’s definition of “Live Webinar”.                                                                                                         LEVEL1 January 9, 16, 23, 30, 2023                                                                                                                                                       This is your introduction to Sandtray. We review history, necessary tools, the protocol to witness a sandtray and practice in dyads. You take on the role of builder and witness.                                                                                              

  • Describe history of sandtray play therapy.  
  • Discuss necessary sandtray tools in your play therapy kit including minitures that represent the different social locations of builders.
  • Describe the sandtray witnessing protocol in Play Therapy including how to document sandtrays.
  • Experience building world while being witnessed by another in sandtray play therapy. 
  • Practice witnessing sandtrays using this play therapy protocol
  • Discuss polyvagal therapy and how this relates to sandtray practice and experience in play therapy. 8 hours of zoom live / 4 hours of reading/ video clips 

Level II February 6, 13, 20, 27th, 2023  Now that you have learned the Sandtray Protocol we will apply this knowledge to working with individuals across the lifespan, couples, families, and groups. Directive sandtrays will be introduced.

  • Practice the sandtray witnessing protocol. 
  • Describe developmental stages according to Havighurst and how these can be observed in the sandtray.
  • Identify miniature’s that would be important to have in your collection to address developmental needs in sandtray play therapy.
  • Discuss three phases of LOVE according to Gottman (limerence, building trust, building commitment and loyalty) and how these can be observed in sandtray play therapy.
  • Discuss miniatures that a therapist working with couples would want in their collection to support couples in completing directive trays that investigate three phases of love and ATTUNE and how these can be utilized in sandtray play therapy.
  • Discuss how to adapt sandtray office space as well as therapist approach to work with families and groups using the sandtray. 

Level III March 8, 13, 21, 27th, 2023 This level reviews how to integrate sandtray with other methods of psychotherapy including CBT, DBT, parts work and specific couples counselling approaches. 

  • Recite how the brain works through the sandtray and play therapy process.
  • Describe polyvagal theory and how sandtray can be used to assist builders in feeling safe using this model (familiarity, cues of safety) in play therapy.
  • Discuss how to incorporate sandtray and play therapy into other models of therapy.
  • Practice using the sandtray to represent parts of self in play therapy.
  • Describe miniatures necessary for integration of sandtray play therapy with other models of therapy.
  • Practice using the sandtray directively using each of the discussed approaches in play therapy.

Approved Providers must have a process in place to identify and disclose any potential conflict of interest to program participants at the start of the CE program. This includes commercial support for any CE presentation, or instructor, and any other relationship that could be reasonably construed as a conflict of interest, including but not limited to an individual provider acting as presenter, reviewer and administrator. 

Cost of program: 

Education Phase - $ 1740. Payment Plan – 580 x 3  Four levels of Sandtray instruction for Levels 1-3 24 hours on Zoom                                                                                                                                    12 hours of prep between sessions

4 hours Asynchronous Coursework hours (Level 4).

Six hours of Group consultation limited to 6 participants

Application PHASE     $350 plus HST

50 witnessed Sandtray sessions using sandtraydoc template with photos and client consent.

1 supervision session where videotaped Sandtray session is reviewed, and feedback provided before Level 3

1 supervision session program facilitators are the client after Level 4.

Genograms have been used since the 1980's to identify family members, strengths, challenges and patterns. Play Miniatures can be utilized with children, adolescents and families to provide a graphic representation of the above.
